What is OCD?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, commonly known as OCD, is a complex mental health condition characterized by intrusive, repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and ritualistic behaviours or mental acts (compulsions). These obsessions and compulsions can often significantly disrupt daily life and cause distress to those experiencing them.
What isn’t OCD?
Colloquially, OCD is sometimes spoken about when referring to someone who is perfectionistic, or slightly neurotic. However, perfectionism and neuroticism describe personality traits, whereas OCD is a mental disorder with specific symptoms. Someone experiencing OCD may be very easy going in many areas of life. Similarly, someone who does not have OCD may be very perfectionistic and like things done a certain way. And it may be that someone has both a perfectionistic personality and suffer from OCD. However, they are distinct, and the distress and impact on those with OCD can be extremely high. The specific symptoms associated with OCD are outlined below.
Symptoms of OCD
OCD symptoms vary among individuals but often include:
Obsessions:
Persistent, intrusive thoughts, disturbing images, or urges causing anxiety, distress, fear and/or guilt
Fear of contamination or harm to self or others
Superstitious thoughts or beliefs, lucky/unlucky numbers
Taboo thoughts
Obsessive doubts about a romantic relationship
Compulsions:
Repetitive behaviours or mental acts performed to alleviate anxiety
Excessive hand washing, checking, counting, or repeating specific actions
Impact on Daily Life
Living with OCD can be challenging. It often impacts various aspects of life, including work, relationships, and overall wellbeing. The cycle of obsessions and compulsions can consume significant time and energy, leading to feelings of frustration and isolation.
Treatment Options
Effective treatments for OCD include:
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT):
CBT, particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), is the first line of treatment for OCD and there is a large body of research to support it’s efficacy.
Medication:
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) can help reduce the frequency and intensity of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. This can be prescribed by a GP or Psychiatrist.
Schema Therapy:
Schema Therapy is a comprehensive approach that addresses deeply ingrained patterns and beliefs underlying OCD symptoms, and can be very useful for addressing leftover symptoms after having tried CBT.
